Meet Our Championship-Level Faculty!

Matthew Zhang
Founder and Executive Director
Matthew Zhang is a rising freshman at Harvard University. Over the past three years, he served as the captain of the Livingston High School Debate Team. During his five-year Public Forum Debate career, Matthew was ranked as high as #1 in New Jersey and #3 in the United States. He has reached late elimination rounds at almost every tournament he has ever attended, winning 8 championships. At the local level, Matthew has championed four NCFL qualifying tournaments. At the national level, he has many outstanding accomplishments at the most prestigious tournaments in the country. They include placing 7th at the Princeton University Invitational, 5th at the Georgetown University Invitational, 3rd at the University of Pennsylvania Liberty Bell Classic, 3rd at the Columbia University Invitational, 1st at the Ridge Debates, 1st at the Pennsbury Falcon Invitational, 6th at the Yale University Invitational, 9th at the Harvard University Invitational, and more. Due to these impressive finishes, Matthew is a 3x qualifier to the NCFL Grand National Tournament, 3x qualifier to the NSDA National Tournament, and a 4x qualifier to the Tournament of Champions—a competition that only the top 1% of all debaters can attend. Matthew placed 3rd in the 2022 NCFL Grand National Tournament. And most notably, he championed the 2020 Tournament of Champions, which made him the youngest debater to ever win a national championship. Matthew now aspires to train his students at Omega into the next generation of national-championship-level debaters!

Hannah Kim
Director of Competitive Speech
Hannah Kim is a rising freshman at the University of Pennsylvania. She served as the captain of the Livingston High School Speech Team for the past three years. At the local level, Hannah has reached the final round at every CFL tournament during her sophomore and junior years, championing two of them. Some impressive finishes during her past three years of competition at national tournaments in Original Oratory include 6th place out of 219 competitors at the 48th Annual Harvard Forensics Tournament, 3rd place at the Stanford Invitational, top 12 at Sunvite, and as a sophomore, top 24 at the George Mason University Patriot Games. Hannah’s titles under the event of Declamation include 2nd place at the Stanford Invitational, 2nd place at the George Mason University Patriot Games, and top 12 at the 46th UPenn Tournament. She is a 2x qualifier to the NCFL Grand National Tournament and qualified for the 2022 Tournament of Champions. On top of her recognition, she holds a certificate of completion from Brown University’s pre-college public speaking program. As a captain, Hannah has an abundance of experience in coaching speech competitors in a multitude of events, whether in Public Address or Interpretation. Aside from speech, Hannah relishes writing creatively and keeping tabs on current events. She is thrilled to meet students at Omega this summer and promises to help all competitors discover their utmost potential!

Dennis Liu
Debate Instructor
Dennis is a rising sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania. He debated at Peddie for 2 years where he and his partner became the first team from their school to compete on the national circuit. They also became the first team in school history to qualify for the Tournament of Champions earning 5 bids and an auto qualification. Most notably he reached late elimination rounds at Stanford, Berkeley, and Princeton invitationals. He also Championed the Berkeley Round Robin and the New Jersey district tournament to qualify for NSDA Nationals where they placed 9th in the country

Eric Wang
Debate Instructor
Eric is a rising sophomore at Washington University in St. Louis on a full tuition scholarship from QuestBridge’s National College Match program. He has competed in Public Forum Debate for the last 4 years, amassing notable accolades from various local and national circuit tournaments. His most impressive awards include qualifying for the NCFL Grand National Tournament during his junior and senior years; reaching the top 64 his junior year and the top 32 his senior year. He has also placed top 16 at the Lakeland Westchester Classic, top 32 at the Jack Howe Memorial Tournament. Moreover, Eric has been ranked top 6 in his local Catholic Forensics League. Beyond competing, Eric is an avid leader, running practices for Varsity debaters both in person and on zoom. Outside of debate, Eric enjoys playing the alto saxophone, volunteering at the local Chinese School, and participating in HOSA, in which he has placed as high as 3rd place internationally for Family Medicine Careers.

Ishan Saxena
Director of Operations and Student development
Ishan Saxena debated Public Forum at Livingston High School for four years, serving as Team Captain and building the team up to the largest membership in its history. He is a junior at the University of California, Berkeley. Ishan is the first debater in the history of his high school to qualify for the Tournament of Champions, National Catholic Forensics League Grand Nationals, and the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) National Tournament in the same season. Recently, Ishan placed in the top 30 at NSDA nationals. He is also Livingston’s first-ever debater to secure multiple gold bids to the Tournament of Champions. Ishan has earned a multitude of individual and team accolades. Some of his notable accomplishments include reaching the quarterfinals of the University of Pennsylvania Liberty Bell Classic, the Scarsdale Invitational, and the Ridge Invitational, as well as reaching the Round of 16 at the Sunvitational and the Columbia Invitational. Ishan also earned a silver bid at the Princeton Invitational Tournament. Additionally, Ishan championed two consecutive NCFL qualifying tournaments in order to qualify for the NCFL Grand National Tournament. Individually, Ishan’s numerous competitive accomplishments include winning the award for Top Speaker at the Villiger National Tournament as well as the award for Fourth Best Speaker at the Blake Invitational. In terms of experience in the realms of coaching, Ishan has previously taught fifth through eighth-graders at a debate academy in the Fall and Winter. Additionally, he has privately taught debate to individual students. Finally, he was tasked with teaching the novice debaters at his high school. His instruction enabled them to reach elimination rounds at multiple local and national tournaments!

Aarush Raj

Aarush Raj is a freshman at Duke University. He avidly competed in Public Forum debate for 4 years. Over his debate career at Livingston High School, Aarush has garnered extremely notable accolades from multiple large, national circuit debate tournaments. His most impressive finishes include reaching the top 16 at the Lakeland Westchester Classic, top 16 at the University of Pennsylvania Liberty Bell Classic, and the top 32 at the prestigious Villiger National tournament. He has also placed in the top 10 on his local Catholic Forensics League circuit. Furthermore, Aarush is an active leader in his high school’s speech and debate team. There, he consistently interacts with new members and beginners, especially by helping them learn Public Forum debate skills. In addition to debate, Aarush engages in multiple extracurricular activities; such as playing soccer, playing the violin, and being a member of the Future Business Leaders of America – in which he has qualified for the association’s National Leadership Conference.

Brandon Lu
Curriculum Director
Brandon Lu is a graduate of New York University, where he majored in chemistry. There, he was also a member of the Phi Lambda Upsilon National Chemistry Honor Society. Over his 4-year high school debate career, Brandon earned top 16 or top 8 rankings at multiple, prestigious national circuit debate tournaments, such as the Prince University and University of Pennsylvania invitationals. He was also a finalist at the competitive Pennsbury National Tournament. Through these impressive performances, Brandon earned qualifications to the Tournament of Champions (TOC), where he placed in the top 16, the NCFL Grand National Tournament, and the NSDA National Championship, where he placed in the top 60. Brandon has since continued his career by competing in college policy debate, in which he has championed two national tournaments: The New York University and Rutgers University Invitationals. Additionally, Brandon has extensive coaching experience. As a private coach for Livingston High School, he elevated their debate teams to national prominence by coaching them to reach late elimination rounds at countless, large national circuit tournaments. Most notably, he coached the very first Gold TOC qualifiers, and the first national champions who won the silver TOC, in Livingston’s school history. One of the teams he coaches even placed in the top 30 at the NSDA National Championship. Furthermore, Brandon has helped lead extremely successful debate classes, summer workshops, and tournaments for the New York City Urban Debate League—the largest debate league in the U.S., which thousands of students participate in.

Arjun Surya is a freshman at Rice University. Over his Varsity Public Forum debate career at Seven Lakes High School, he has accumulated 3 gold bids and 5 silver bids to the Tournament of Champions. In 2022, he placed 2nd at the NSDA National Tournament, making him a top 2 debater in the nation! Arjun has reached late elimination rounds at many high-level tournaments, including Emory where he placed in the top 8, and Princeton where he placed in the top 16. Aside from circuit tournaments, he has also been invited to many national-level round robins, such as the Presentation Round Robin which he championed, and the Kandi King Round Robin in which he placed 2nd. Arjun has been coaching middle school teams at a local academy in Katy, Texas for the past 2 years, and he is excited to be working with Omega Debate this season!

Jasper Datta

Jasper Datta debated for four years at Newton South High School in Massachusetts. Over his career, Jasper has qualified to the TOC twice and accumulated 8 bids to the Tournament of Champions. Most notably, he championed Columbia and the Presentation Round Robin, finaled Blake, and reached deep outrounds at a host of other tournaments including Yale and Princeton. Additionally, Jasper placed 3rd at the Gold Tournament of Champions, and placed 16th at NSDA nationals his junior year. Individually, Jasper received a handful of top-10 speaker awards at major national circuit tournaments. As a coach, Jasper’s students have reached late outrounds at tournaments across the country and qualified for the TOC.

Chris Sylvester
Instructor
Chris Sylvester is a freshman at Yale University. He is an instructor at Omega Speech and Debate. Over his Varsity Public Forum debate career at Walt Whitman High School, Chris accomplished extremely impressive finishes at countless big, prestigious national circuit tournaments. His most notable performances include placing in the top 16 at the University of Kentucky Season Opener, the New York City Invitational, and the Laird Lewis Invitational; winning 4th place at the Columbia University Invitational, and championing (placing 1st at) the prestigious Georgetown University Invitational. This past season, Chris earned 5 qualifying bids to the Tournament of Champions (TOC) – the 2nd most bids out of all 10th-grade debaters in the nation, and one of the highest amounts of bids out of all the teams in the nation. He is also one of the only debaters this season to have earned a TOC qualifying bid at 3 consecutive tournaments. Due to his vast collection of accolades, Chris has been ranked as high as the 16th best Public Forum debate team in the nation!

Samuel Hall
Instructor
Samuel Hall is a former Public Forum debater for Livingston High School. He is a junior at the University of Chicago who studies economics and math. During his 4-year high school debate career, Sam competed extensively all across the nation—earning big and historic accomplishments along the way. Sam reached deep elimination rounds at numerous prestigious, national circuit tournaments. For example, he placed in the top 32. at the University of Kentucky Season Opener and the Princeton Invitational, the top 16 at the Sunvitational and the Columbia Invitational, and the top 8 at the University of Pennsylvania Liberty Bell Classic and the Scarsdale tournament. These impressive finishes made Sam the first debater in the history of Livingston High School to qualify for the Tournament of Champions twice—a tournament reserved for the top 200 debate teams in the nation. Additionally, Sam has served as a captain of the Livingston speech and debate team. There, he coached younger members of the team to succeed on the local New Jersey debate circuit. Overall, Sam has found Public Forum debate as a home to find his voice and to explore his passions in foreign policy and economics!
